Annes Grove Miniature Castle

Places to Stay | Co. Cork, Ireland

Situated at the junction of three small quiet country roads is a miniature medieval castle. Annes Grove Miniature Castle in County Cork was designed in 1853 to impress visitors to the main house – Annesgrove House and Gardens.

The silence which surrounds this rural property is part of the charm for visitors. This is an enchanting place with a living room warmed by a fireplace, a well-equipped kitchen, one double bedroom, and a bathroom.

It was built in 1853 by the distinguished architect Benjamin Woodward (who designed parts of both Trinity College and Oxford University). Since Woodward designed only two gatelodges of this type, it is of some architectural importance.  It was conceived as a medieval castle in miniature. The architectural lines of the rooms — leaded windows, doorways, and ceilings — all echo the classic Gothic arch.

What could be more romantic than a tiny Gothic castle just big enough for two?  There is perhaps no dreamier base from which to explore Cork.

NOTE:  Access to the bedroom is by way of a narrow winding stone stairway.
