Ashbrook House

Places to See | Co. Londonderry, Northern Ireland.

Ashbrook is a  unique historic house in Northern Ireland as it has been continuously lived in by the same family since before the plantation. The house and family have strong historic links with the City of Derry.

The Honorable The Irish Society records the Ash family as one of only four ‘native land owners’ prior to the plantation. It is set in 30 acres of mature parkland on the outskirts of the city of Londonderry- The Maiden City, made famous by the Ulster Plantations and The Siege of Derry.

The Ashbrook estate was granted as a gift to General Thomas Ash by Queen Elizabeth I in the 1590s as a reward for his aid in quashing the O’Neill Rebellion during the Nine Years War – the conflict which ultimately led to the historic Flight of Earls from Lough Swilly in 1603. Captain Thomas Ash recorded the 1689 Siege of Derry in a famous contemporary diary, which is believed by historians to be the most definitive contemporary account of the Great Siege.

Nowadays, the house is available for events, concerts, wedding photos and receptions. It is a fascinating place to see in Co Londonderry and is open on European Heritage Open Days
