Hillsborough Courthouse

Places to See | Co. Down, Northern Ireland.

The Courthouse, which is based in the Square in Hillsborough, is one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in Ireland. The central arcade block was built by Wills Hill in 1760 and in 1810 the North wing was added and housed a courthouse.

In the same year the South wing was added and was used as an open market hall. The South wing is still used today for the very popular country markets. The North wing is now home to a major exhibition on the history and development of the country’s legal system. With the help of displays, visitors can learn about 1,000 years of Irish Legal History.

Visitors can also view the interior of the courtroom where the fittings date from 1823.

Hillsborough Tourist Information Centre is located in the building, which is also used for craft fairs, book fairs, art exhibitions, conferences and wedding receptions. This acts as a central guide of places to see in County Down and has information on other Historic Places in Northern Ireland.

  1. Hello, Is it possible that you would have any court records for a Mary McPolan, (sometimes McRoland, McPoland, McDolan)? She was convicted in 1843 in County Down for the theft of 3 pigs from a Mr McCarthy and transported to Australia for 7 years along with her daughter Catherine Murphy who was aged 8 yrs. She had a prior conviction which I beleive was in Hillsborough for “leaving her child”, but I am unsure of that year. Mary was born about 1816 and 28 when sent to Australia, leaving on the ship Greenlaw from Dublin.
Do you think you can help?
    Thanking you

    • Hi Gail.

Thanks for the comment. We can’t help you with your request specifically here as we’re not a genealogy service. Recommend you try to contact Hillsborough Courthouse directly on +44 28 9054 3030 or nieainfo[at]doeni.gov.uk. I’m sure they should be able to point you in the right direction.
