Dan Winters House

Places to See | Co. Armagh, Northern Ireland.

Dan Winter’s House is located at the Diamond near the small town of Loughgall in County Armagh and is run by Hilda Winter who has maintained the cottage in its original condition.

This small cottage museum is one of the hidden gems we come across from time to time, full of history and a place to see in Co Armagh.

The home of the Winter family from before 1700, this listed building is an 18th century vernacular thatched farmhouse and is recognized in its listing as ‘The meeting place following the Battle of the Diamond, where the decision to form the Orange Order was made.’

Restored by owner Hilda Winter who is a direct descendent by marriage of Dan Winter, a local farmer whose field became the site of the 1795 Battle of the Diamond.

The Winter family lived in the house right up until the 1950s, and today its rooms are crammed with Orange & Winter ephemera. Old pots and kettles hang above the original fireplace and Orange sashes, certificates and newspaper articles line the walls.

Dan Winter’s House is a living document of the Orange Order and Hilda has a wealth of knowledge on the history. It is also a well-preserved example of early Irish cottage life.

This historic house in Northern Ireland is open on European Heritage Open Days.
