Derry Playhouse

Places to See | Co. Londonderry, Northern Ireland.

Founded in 1992 with a grant of just £300, The Playhouse Theatre has grown to become one of Ireland’s leading multi-disciplinary community art resource centres. It is a pacesetting arts organisation driving community creativity through the city and one of the premier theatres in Northern Ireland.

The refurbishment of the Derry Playhouse on Artillery Street won a major architectural award and the art centre featured in the BBC4 ‘Restoration’ programme. The buildings are now one of the best examples in Northern Ireland of how listed buildings can be restored sympathetically, and fused with very modern design to showcase the best of 19th, 20th and 21st century architecture

Situated in the heart of the historic walled city, The Playhouse is comprised of a 175 seat theatre, an extensive education and outreach department, a dance studio, a gallery and is also home to several cultural / art based groups and tenants. Over 100,000 people pass through the doors of The Playhouse each year.

The complex is one of the popular places to see in Derry City during European Heritage Open Days.
